Last week we saw that there was a tide of opposition that was rising against our dear Lord… the tide hadn’t overflowed its banks yet, but the animosity of the religious leaders was waxing worse and worse.  Jesus healed a man on the Sabbath and in doing so showed great compassion for him.  The scribes and Pharisees, on the other hand, flew into a rage because Jesus didn’t observe their man-made Sabbath traditions… they were so upset with Him that they were plotting murder on the Sabbath.  I hope the contrast is so clear… healing a man on the Sabbath versus plotting murder on the Sabbath… that is something even a blind man ought to be able to see. There was a tide of opposition that was rising against our dear Lord… the tide hadn’t overflowed its banks yet, but as we saw last week and we will see yet again today the tide of opposition is getting higher and higher. The animosity of the religious leaders is waxing worse and worse.

Jesus officially began His public ministry one short chapter ago and already we can see He has become a lightening rod… the religious leaders have already tried to kill Him (Luke 4:29) because while they didn’t get a lot of things right, they got one thing right… they understood Jesus was claiming to be the Messiah, God manifest in the flesh… the One who has power to heal and the very same One who has the power to forgive sins. “As soon as I get well I am going to make an appointment to go see the doctor.”  What do you think of that statement?  I think we would all raise our eyebrows and say that person certainly isn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer.  I think it is quite obvious that doctors are for sick people… not for those who are well.
