Luke 10:21-24 – In that hour Jesus rejoiced in the Spirit and said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and revealed them to babes. Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight.
22 “All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.”
23 Then He turned to His disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes which see the things you see;
24 “for I tell you that many prophets and kings have desired to see what you see, and have not seen it, and to hear what you hear, and have not heard it.”

Our text today is going to teach us a lot about discipleship… in fact, if we stand back and look at the big picture (what has been transpiring in chapter 9 and the first 16 verses in chapter 10) we will see that we have already been learning a lot about discipleship.

Our text today doesn’t appear to most people to be outrageous or inflammatory when we first read it, but I trust by the time we finish unpacking it, I trust you will see the words that Jesus spoke in our text today had the effect of pouring gasoline onto a fire. You will understand why the Jews were all the more determined to put Jesus to death… you will understand why they never forgave Jesus for saying such “blasphemous” things.

Reader’s Digest is not the place I go to looking for theological answers, but I came across one of their articles that caught my attention. It reads as follows, “A pastor began his Sunday morning sermon by saying, ‘I’d like to make three points today. First, there are millions of people around the world who are going to Hell. Second, most of us sitting here today don’t give a damn about that.’ After a lengthy pause, he continued, ‘My third point is that you are more concerned that I, your pastor, said the word ‘damn’ than you are about the millions going to Hell.’”
It is easy to major in the minors, isn’t it? It is easy to get our priorities all mixed up to the point where we don’t see the forest for the trees. Read the rest of this entry »
