If you and I went out into Anytown, USA and asked people, “If you could have one wish… any wish at all granted to you,” what do you think most people would say? Would it be for more money? A different/ better spouse? Better health? How about, “I’d like to look like Julia Roberts or Brad Pitt,” or “I’d like to be famous,” or “I’d like to play golf like Tiger Woods.” I think a lot of people would ask for such things, but to get to the one thing that people really wanted most, perhaps it would be better to ask, “If there is one thing in life that you could avoid, what would it be?” I believe the overwhelming answer would be, “I want to avoid death.”

Next Sunday we celebrate Easter. For many Christians, Easter and Christmas are the 2 biggest days of the year, and rightfully so as we celebrate the birth of Christ on Christmas and we celebrate His resurrection on Easter. I know it is obvious but I am going to say it anyway… there would be no rainbow without a rainstorm, and more importantly, there would be no resurrection without death. We all like rainbows, but we don’t like the storm that precedes it. And we all like to celebrate the resurrection, but again, we don’t like the storm that precedes it.
This is the week that we celebrate Good Friday. Have you ever wondered about the name, Good Friday? Does it not seem at least somewhat paradoxical to call the day on which Jesus died Good Friday? Suppose, for a moment, you imagine the death of the person who is your dearest friend here on earth, and let’s say your dearest friend died a horrible death on a Friday.
